3 Keys to the Game
The Run
They do not open a clean hole. Sikorski, Baker, and Robertson all grade under 60 as run blockers, and the team run-block grade fell to 48.7 at Tennessee, the low of their season. The back is the run. Of Hollywood Smothers' 198 yards, 141 came after a defender got a hand on him, and he has forced 13 missed tackles. Saturday the tackle held. He had 12 carries for 39. The team had 32 for 122 and did not score. The front has to fit the run, and the second man has to finish the tackle.
The Escape
Arch Manning will beat you if he gets to set his feet. Once the pocket is dirty he completes 53.8 percent, and about a quarter of those dropbacks end in a sack. He holds the ball. One rusher will not create that. Dylan Sikorski has not allowed a pressure in 128 pass-blocking snaps, so the rush has to arrive as a group. Then he leaves. On the year the runs they call for him are 24 carries for minus-8, and the scrambles are 20 for 149. Saturday the scramble was the play. Peyton Bowen picked him while he was running and brought it back 42 yards for a score. The defense has to be in his hip when he pulls it down.
The True Dropback
Their rush ends the play when the ball stays in on a straight drop. Colin Simmons has 8 sacks, 7 of them on true pass sets, and Lance Jackson has 14 pressures beside him. At Missouri, Philo was a 70.0 passer when the pocket was clean and a 56.0 when it collapsed. The pass-block grade on that game was 55.8. South Carolina sacked him three times. The line has to give help, and the ball has to be gone before that dropback becomes a sack.
